More prisoners in the past year escape their imprisonment. Secretary Dijkhoff reported to parliament that a small 2900 people were not sitting in jail on May 1, whereas they were sentenced to a custodial sentence. A year earlier there are still over 2400.

Dijkhoff attributes the increase to the "high influx of short irrevocable imprisonment for convicts with a foreign or unknown whereabouts". According to the Secretary of State that group after conviction is difficult to trace, so the penalty is not carried out and often lengthy open.

He wants to use more frequently in cases of this type (super) summary trials and he thinks that the number of vacant punishment therefore will fall further.

Reduction

Dike Hoff writes that Justice is trying in various ways to reduce the number back. Of the people who were wrongly years ago not in jail, is now 19 percent still his sentence or has already done so.

According to the Secretary of State had the convicts who last year tracked down and arrested an average sentence length of 103 days per person. Together, they had to 122 years in jail. The most common offenses in this group were theft, violence and burglary.
