Russia regrets politicize research MH17

Russia regrets that the parties Wednesday at the United Nations have tried to get a tribunal of the land on the crash last year of a Malaysian Boeing 777 make it a political matter.

It is unfortunate that the initiators hastily and without consultation on alternatives proceeded, suggested Russia's Foreign Ministry Thursday in a statement distributed by Russian media.

Russia has repeatedly argued that it is too early to establish such a tribunal and that it also counterproductive to the investigation. But that is not listened to. Russia has therefore compelled Wednesday in the Security Council to block the politicized initiative, said the Kremlin.

Lawyer Geert-Jan Knoops thinks a tribunal in the Netherlands is now the best option. ,, The interested countries with the support of the UN to establish a tribunal of international judges and prosecutors. I am thinking of the countries Australia, Belgium, New Zealand, Malaysia. I'm going to also assume that other countries will join this. Countries that do not recognize the tribunal are not obliged to cooperate. It is therefore important that Russia is going to do it anyway. ''

Knoops expects that Russia will do this only if there is strong evidence coming out of the criminal investigation. It is not yet known when this becomes apparent. ,, The investigations still pending, should really make it clear that Russia is behind this. Should, for example, people are called or there must be other strong evidence against the Russians. I think Russia or will tack. In the past it happened for example in the Lockerbie bombing. When Libya eventually cooperated. But if the evidence remain too vague, then I think it's a tricky thing. ''

The Netherlands was one of the main perpetrators. With the crash of the aircraft over eastern Ukraine were 298 people killed, including 196 Dutch.
