Too few placements for maritime students

The number of students at maritime academies has risen sharply in recent years, and that makes for an imminent shortage internship at sea. That says Martin Dorsman, director of the Royal Association of Dutch Shipowners (KVNR).

"This year we can ensure that everyone has an internship. But for the coming year, we are afraid that there are still some students sit without internship." This has considerable implications for maritime students. "They run study delayed and may not finish on time their training because they have to do their internship later."

Next problem

The surplus of maritime students is remarkable: a long time was working at sea from grace. Therefore, a campaign was started in 2008 to encourage young people to the maritime interest. And that is quite successful over the past six years the number of students has grown by over 60 percent. But now thus arises the following problem: too many students.

Trainee is expensive

The companies can not just solve the problem, says the director of the KVNR. "Not all our members have a ship, or enough space on their ship." In addition, a trainee takes a lot of money, "the student is, in fact half a year out to sea and therefore a cabin must be in the ship cabins The more the bigger the ship, and that means the ship will have to pay more if they are in port. lying down. "

Ship owners still want to try to create additional training places, for example on land rather than at sea.

'International issue'

"We also want to shorten the training period," said Dorsman. "The students now have twice a half year internship to complete their education. We would like to see reduced. However, since the programs are globally regulated, it can adapt not only happen in the Netherlands. Therefore we have to Europe, so we want to try to go at short notice. "

According KVNR this is also an international problem: "We hear the same kind of signals from Belgium and Germany."
